Description | A survey of Mexican American/Chicanx literature from Mesoamerica to the present. Students will study literary works of fiction, poetry, drama, essays, and memoirs in relation to their historical, linguistic, political, regional, gendered, and cultural contexts. Texts will be selected from a diverse group of authors, literary movements, and media forms. Topics and themes may include the literary performance of identity and culture, aesthetic mediation of racialization, struggle and protest, and artistic activism. | ||||||||

Weekly assignments include (but are not limited to) readings, discussion/critical thinking prompts, response papers, and quizzes. The Major Assignments for this semester are the midterm exam, the group project, and the final exam. |

This class requires that you have a good grasp of the online learning platforms, such as Blackboard and Office 365; students should have steady access to the internet and a computer with a keyboard to properly complete written assignments. Furthermore, plagiarism is a form of academic dishonesty and will not be tolerated in this class; all work must be written by the student enrolled in the class without outside help that is not provided by the instructor. The plagiarism policy will be discussed in further detail with the course, but be it known that a first offense of blatant plagiarism will result in a 0 grade for that assignment with no chance to make it up; a second offense of blatant plagiarism will result in failure of the course. |

Attendance Policy |
Attendance and participation in this class counts for 10% of your overall grade; this will be determined by physical attendance in class meetings, participation in class discussions (in-person and virtual), as well as in completion of assignments in a timely manner. It is at the instructor's discretion to deduct points from this grade after 3 unexcused absences, 5 days of inactive online activity, and/or failure to complete work on time repeatedly. |
